Always apply tretinoin as a final step in your nighttime routine, after cleansing and toning.
Using Moisturizer with Tretinoin
Use a moisturizer daily. Tretinoin can dry your skin; a good moisturizer is crucial for mitigating this.
- Choose a fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Apply moisturizer 20-30 minutes *after* applying tretinoin to allow the tretinoin to absorb properly.
Other Products to Avoid Combining with Tretinoin
- AHAs/BHAs: Combining these with tretinoin significantly increases your risk of irritation and sensitivity. Use them on alternate nights. Benzoyl peroxide: This can negate the effects of tretinoin and cause intense dryness and peeling. Avoid using them simultaneously. Strong exfoliants (scrubs, etc.): These can further irritate already sensitive skin treated with tretinoin. Minimize their use. Products containing alcohol or fragrances: These will increase dryness and irritation. Opt for gentler alternatives.
Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable
Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher during the day. Tretinoin makes your skin more sensitive to sun damage.
Apply sunscreen liberally 30 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
Introducing New Products
Introduce new skincare products gradually. Start by using a small amount of the new product every other day to assess any reactions before incorporating it into your daily routine.
Listen to Your Skin
If you experience excessive redness, burning, or peeling, reduce the frequency of your tretinoin use or discontinue use of the other product. Consult a dermatologist for guidance.
