Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days. Retin-A increases your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, making sunburns more likely. This heightened sensitivity lasts for several hours after application.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
Opt for a sunscreen formulated for sensitive skin. Look for mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as these are generally less irritating. Apply sunscreen generously 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
Minimizing Sun Exposure
Limit your time in direct sunlight, especially between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. when the sun’s rays are strongest. Wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and long sleeves, when outdoors. Sunglasses shielding your eyes from UV rays are also important.
Nighttime Application
Apply Retin-A at night to allow your skin to repair itself overnight. This minimizes sun exposure during the day. If daytime application is unavoidable, strictly follow the sunscreen guidelines above.
